영원토록 넘치는 기쁨 부요하신 자로서 너희를 위하여 가난하게 되심은...... 너희로 부요케 하려 하심이니라 -고린도후서 8:9 월스트리트저널의 칼럼 기고가인 조나 단 클레먼츠는 "행복에 투자하는 아홉 가지 요령"을 제안했습니다. 흥미롭게도 그 중 하나는 존슨 오트맨이 작사했으며 오랫동안 사랑받아 온 찬송가 "세상 모든 풍파 너를 흔들어"의 내용과 동일합니다. 클레먼츠는 이웃의 부요함에 대해 부러워하지 말고 우리가 현재 지닌 많은 축복을 생각해보라고 권합니다. 그것은 주 안에서의 영적인 풍요가 그 어떤 물질적인 소유보다 비교도 안 될 만큼 더 큰 가치가 있음을 우리가 알고 있을 경우에 현명한 조언이 됩니다. 하나님은 우리에게 행복의 지침서로 성경을 주신 것이 아닙니다. 그렇지만 성경은 우리에게 어떻게 영원히 기뻐할 수 있는지, 그리고 어떻게 그러한 영원한 행복을 찾아가는 삶의 여정에서 기쁨을 경험할 수 있는지 말해줍니다. 그러므로 성경의 진리를 상식적인 충고와 비교해보는 것이 깨달음을 줍니다. 바울은 디모데에게 "자족하는 마음이 있으면 경건이 큰 이익이 되느니라" (딤전 6:6)라고 썼습니다. 바울사도는 자신의 제자인 디모데가 기초생활만으로도 감사하는 마음을 가지면 탐욕의 함정으로부터 스스로를 지킬 수 있다는 것을 이해하길 원했습니다. 그러므로 우리는 하나님의 놀라운 은혜에 초점을 맞추고, 감사의 영이 우리의 삶 속에 충만할 수 있도록 우리 자신을 연단 합시다. 그것이 오늘 기쁨을 경험하고 나아가 영원히 기쁨이 넘치게 되는 길입니다. Interestingly, one of his suggestions was precisely the same as that given in the favorite old hymn by Johnson C. Oatman, "Count Your Many Blessings." Clements urges us not to brood over the riches of our neighbors but to focus on the many blessings we actually do possess. That''s wise counsel, provided that we realize our spiritual wealth in Jesus is immeasurably more valuable than any material possessions. God didn''t give us the Bible as a guidebook for happiness. Yet it tells us how we can be eternally joyful and how we can experience joy on our way to that eternal happiness. So it''s enlightening to compare biblical truth with common-sense advice. "Godliness with contentment is great gain," Paul wrote to Timothy (1 Tim. 6:6). The apostle wanted his protege to understand that being grateful for the basics of life would help keep him from the trap of covetousness. So let''s focus on the wonders of God''s grace, training ourselves to make a spirit of gratitude pervade our lives.
